Susan Leslie Nickerson
On June 20th, friends, co-workers, Sweet Adelines, and family members gathered together to celebrate the life of Susan Leslie Nickerson who passed away on June 13, 2004. Sue was the former director of the Roseville Library. For 35 years she worked to provide library services to the community in which she lived. She was very instrumental in the establishment of the Maidu Branch Library which will be rededicated by the City of Roseville. A plaque to honor her will be placed in the foyer of the library.
Sue's activities were not limited to the library. She was also active in the League of Women Voters and the Roseville Historical Society. She was a member and past president of the Roseville chapter of Soroptimist International and a member of Sweet Adelines, International.
During her 12+ years as a member of Sweet Adelines she sang with the Camellia City / River City Showcase Chorus, Sacramento Valley Chorus, and at least 4 competing quartets. Usually Sue sang baritone, but she was also bi-sectional...able to fill in on any vocal part when needed. "Rent-a-tenor" was a phrase often used in connection with Sue's movements from part to part.
Those who were fortunate enough to know her in life remember her for her very dry (sometimes colorful) wit, her strong sense of the power of women, her love of literature, her typographical skills, her love and loyality to friends and family (including her cats), and her love of music. She will be missed by many!
Sue, I've proofread this and hope I've finally met your strict standards of perfection. Thank you for being a wonderful mentor to so many. Your Sweet Adeline sister, Sue Booth |
